While working with KSAN, Pat McGuinness was also the political consultant for Mamoru Yamaichi, candidate in 1980 Republican Primary
for 27th District Assembly. He created and
administered public opinion polls; designed campaign advertising, such as:
bumper stickers; billboards; and newspaper ads; purchased advertising.
He developed and wrote radio commercials,
supervised and directing their recording, and bought the radio time. He also devised campaign strategy, recruited
volunteer and paid campaign help, and arranged for media interviews of the candidate
and his booking for public speaking engagements. |

 Patrick was Director of Advertising, Promotions and Special Events
for KMET, Hollywood. He was responsible for a more than half-million dollar
station advertising budget. In promotions, he devised and supervised a highly successful, ongoing
T-shirt campaign in which tens of thousands of KMET T-shirts were manufactured and sold to the audience. Promotions
also included giving away tens of thousands of KMET bumper stickers, other promotional give-aways plus arranging for
personal appearances for the KMET disc jockeys. Included in Special
Events was the logist1cal planning for a major rock concert at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum that included arranging for police and fire security, obtaining hotel
accommodations, meals and other incidentals to maintain a staff of more than 50 over the 4 day period.
He also wrote and co-produced a 2 hour weekly KMET public affairs program.
He also wrote and distributed related pres releases. |

campaign. He supervised a staff of ten; wrote press releases for dissemination to the statewide

Pat McGuinness was also the State Press Director for the "No On 14" campaign.
He hired the staff for 5 regional campaign press offices and supervised deputy press secretaries in each office as well as the staff and activities of each office. In addition to writing press releases,
Pat arranged for key campaign interviews, and answering media requests for detailed information about the campaign issues.
Pat McGuinness also advised and prepared campaign spokespersons
for appearance for television interviews, as well as myriad other duties that included attending various campaign meetings throughout the

 Pat
was under contract to the American Broadcasting Company during this
period. Initially doing three daily local newscasts for KABC, Los Angeles. During the morning and early afternoon
Patrick was in the field as a reporter gathering material for his evening newscasts. In 1965
his assignment changed to assisted General Manager Ben Hoberman in
pioneering the radio "news/talk" format. At this point he anchored a 3 hour bloc of news shows called "Evening Newswatch." In addition to anchoring,
Pat McGuinness also did several 5 minute newscasts which, for the most part,
he wrote himself. During 1966 his assignment expanded to add a morning newscast
at 8:30am, which he also wrote.
Also at KABC Radio,
Pat wrote and produced a monthly documentary program, while also writing and producing
a monthly half hour interview show. In addition to that,
beginning in 1967, he wrote and voiced a nightly network newscast.
In 1968 Pat switched over from local to network news writing and voicing week-end newscasts to the full, ABC Information
Network. He also received reporting assignments for the full
network during this time |

a field reporter for KNXT (now KCBS) TV, Los Angeles, Patrick covered news on location with a camera crew. After the film was developed
(no portable video recording in those days) he supervised the editing and often wrote the news script for the story. On

he was in the field covering local events and happenings.

As News Director for KFWB in Los Angeles, he supervised a 5 man news staff, performed administrative duties,
as well as writing and voicing several newscasts each day. During the period
from 1953-57, Pat set up the KFWB news department to operate Monday through Friday from the city room of the Los Angeles Mirror-News
(newspaper). These broadcasts were done from a custom news booth in the city room,
where the KFWB newscaster received carbon copies (remember those?) of each
reporters stories filed with the city
desk thus giving the station
expanded local news coverage. During the time from 1958-59, the new owners of KFWB
short-sightedly ended the Mirror News operation as an economy
move, and the news department then operated solely from their Hollywood studios. As
News Director, Pat McGuinness also supervised the assignment of KFWB reporters using
their fleet of mobile news trucks - one of the first to do so. |
