Charles McGuinness
This is a series of articles written by Captain Charles J McGuinness, of Derry, Northern Ireland, also residing in New York, USA. He went to fight for the Republican side in this bloody little war, which was a German rehearsal for World War II. It was the Fascists with Hitler's help who won the war! These are reprinted from the Irish Independent Newspaper of Dublin, Ireland from January 1937, though one bit is missing. They are displayed here for scholarly purposes only. Any residual copyright is acknowledged.
I have included, and will include more, material related to the conflict. By it's nature, this is both a tribute to an individual, and a history of the period, as seen through his eyes (with a touch of "blarney" thrown in!). It is not intended as a definitive history of the conflict, nor of the suffering of those involved. There are those who call him a "James Bond" in his own mind, but the reality is simply this, that there are very few who had the will to do anything! Captain McGuinness was one who saw his way clear, and took action, time and time again. While he may not have been a James Bond, he was (feet of clay and all) an Indiana Jones! As his son, Patrick McGuinness, once said "Never spoil a good story for the truth!". Charles McGuinness was a good story teller!
Like most areas of this website, this is a work of personal conviction. It is being done not for the contemporaries, or the historians. It is being done for the children, grand children, and great grand children of Charles McGuinness the world over, so that they may have this first hand connection with their ancestor, spoken through his own words. Would that we all have the drive to explore and foment change in our own world! So tip a glass of Guinness, and toast to the adventurous souls we once had! "May we see their kind again!"
