Charles J. McGuinness in Russia

During his many careers, Captain McGuinness journeyed to the "Worker's Paradise" The Soviet Union of Socialist Republics, where he  was appointed to the post of Harbor Master for the Port of Saint Petersburg.

His adventure is fully cataloged in his book, published in 1937, "Behind the Red Curtain" - incidentally, this is the earliest know reference to the "Curtain" metaphor applied in print to the Soviet Union!

During the Depression, unemployment in the western nations enabled the Soviet Union to import thousands of engineers, and other able specialists. They all came, running from unemployment and eager to help build socialism.

This page is presently under construction, and will be added to as time permits.
