It is believed that the site was inhabited from 1500 BCE (BC) till about 1400 CE (AD), and though very little of what was once a city of 10,000 to 25,000, or more souls has been excavated, visitors can see parts of roadways, aqueducts, pools, tombs and the foundations of homes. Plus unique petroglyphs used as markers, maps, and more.

These structures could also have been multi-story, with sleeping quarters in the rafters. The enigma of Guayabo is both the size of the city - the largest know in the transitional zone between Mesoamerica proper and the South American cultures. Was Guayabo an insular, isolated culture hidden from the outside, with only minimal coastal trade? Or was it a unique large scale culture that developed independently from the Maya to the north, and the Colombian culture to the south? Since no linguistic records remain, it is not precisely know. But it is believed that culturally they share much in common with the cultures to their south - from Colombia and Panama. And like their neighbors to the south, they were very prolific builders of wide paved roads. Far wider than can be justified by normal foot traffic.
