In ancient times many different
native groups lived in the land that is now Oaxaca. The most famous were the
Zapotec and the Mixtec. The Zapotec established the center of their culture
at Monte Albán near the present-day city of Oaxaca by about 100
BC. After about
AD 900 the Mixtec began to take the
place of the Zapotec.

The Tarasco have lived in the
region that is now Michoacán for centuries. The name Tarasco was given to
them by Spanish settlers who arrived in the 1500s. The Indians' name for
themselves is Purépecha. They built two major cities on the shores of Lake
Pátzcuaro by about the AD 1300s.
From there they controlled a large area. They were able to stay independent
when the neighboring Aztec tried to take over their land in the 1400s. But
in the following century the Tarasco became part of the Spanish world of
Nueva España (Mexico).
